A quote from Honorius Augustodunensis [died 1151] a Christian non-"scholastic" [no Thomas Aquinas = no hard-core Catholic] cleric.
The following tidbits I lifted from a few places on the Web:
His most important work was the Imago mundi, an encyclopedia of popular cosmology and geography combined with a chronicle of world history. It was translated into many different vernacular languages and was very popular throughout the medieval period. It contained, among other things, a scheme for the operation of guardian angels.
"There lies in the Ocean an island which is called The Lost. In Charm and all kinds of fertility it far surpasses every other land, but it is unknown to men. Now and again it may be found by chance; but if one seeks it, it cannot be found, and therefore it is called The Lost. "
